Spring trainings with Tahoe Rim Trail

The summer trail season is fast approaching, though you wouldn’t know it with our recent storms! To prepare for a great summer, the TRTA is offering many training opportunities this spring. Learn how to build trail, become a hike leader, navigate in the snow, get certified in Wilderness First Aid and more! Check out the full list below for our exciting summer programs.
Trail Construction and Crew Leader Workshop May 14 to May 16
Are you interested in learning how to build trail, becoming a crew leader, or improving your trail work skills? Learn how to design, build, and maintain trails at our three day workshop held at Galena Creek Regional Park. On Friday the Trail Layout and Design Course will cover design concepts, trail project leadership, layout principles, clinometer orientation, and topo map exercises.
On Saturday and Sunday, opportunities exist for trail builders of all experiences from beginner to expert. The Basic course will cover trail overview & standards, corridor clearing & tread creation, introduction to technical trail features, and tools & safety. The crew leader course will teach trail standards, basic construction techniques, tool use & briefing, leadership, safety, and crew administration. The advanced course will discuss to name a few topics: construction/oversight of advanced rockwork projects, pre-planning for large scale projects, quality control standards, and effective use of crew resources.

Guide Training May 21 to May 23
Are you interested in becoming a TRTA hike guide? If so, we invite you to attend our two and a half day Guide Training course which will take place May 21 – 23 at Granlibakken Conference Center in Tahoe City, CA. Guide Training will give you the basic introduction to everything you need to know to successfully guide a day-hike in the Lake Tahoe Basin. Track A topics covered will be Planning and Preparing, Conducting and Leadership, Safety and Emergency, Leave No Trace and Navigation.
New this year for participants who have completed track A, we will be offering Track B which will cover interpretive skills on the trail.
Anyone over age 18 is welcome to attend, regardless of previous experience. If you love the outdoors and simply want to increase your knowledge, or if you feel you’re ready to take a group out on the trail then please come!

Wilderness First Aid May 1 – 2 and June 26 – 27
The Tahoe Rim Trail Association is hosting a two-day Wilderness First Aid course taught by the NOLS Wilderness Medicine Institute. This course covers a wide range of wilderness medicine topics and may also be used to recertify those with previous training such as a Wilderness First Responder, Wilderness Advanced First Aid and Wilderness EMT (wilderness portion). Upon successful completion of this WFA course you will earn a WMI of NOLS wilderness medicine certification.
Days are filled with dynamic lessons and exciting, realistic scenarios to best model the kind of medical situations you might face, whether you’re an outdoor educator, guide, camp counselor or just someone who enjoys being outside with friends. You can expect lots of personal attention, lots of scenarios designed to enhance your ability to manage stressful situations, and plenty of fun!

Interpretive Writing Workshop Friday, April 9
Taught by Alan Leftridge, an experienced interpretive writer, this course will give you the skills you need to communicate effectively and engagingly with your audience about our natural world. The intent of interpretive writing is to make an emotional and intellectual connection with the reader. In this interactive workshop, you’ll learn techniques to do just that. Spice up your brochures, web sites, public service announcements, books, magazine articles and other interpretive projects!
