City of Bend close to approving much needed whitewater park, from Brad Goettemoeller

January 13, 2010

The Bend Metro Park and Recreation Board unanimously approved the engineering design for the Colorado dam that incorporates a safe passage channel for tubers/flat water paddlers/moving water paddlers, improved wildlife habitat, and whitewater features at their meeting on January 5th!

This important step gets us closer to having whitewater play features right here in Bend and shows that all the hard work by Bend Paddle Trail Alliance (BPTA) and local paddlers over the years is being recognized. In fact, the Bend Metro Parks & Recreation Board stated during the meeting that the Bend Paddle Trail Alliance is one of the most professional organizations they have worked with over the years and that they are looking forward to establishing a private/public partnership with BPTA to develop this project. This partnership will be critical to raising the community support and funding that will be needed to ultimately improve the Colorado dam and provide Bend with new and expanded recreational opportunities.

The Deschutes River is a majestic water resource that provides recreation opportunity and extraordinary scenic value to those of us who live (and visit) Central Oregon. The BPTA is committed to enhancing the Deschutes River’s recreational amenities while fostering stewardship and safety for all river users.
