Stay active this winter with a Hiking Buddy
November 29, 2009
From 2006 to 2008 the Nevada Humane Society, a no-kill organization, received a 1,900 percent increase in dogs for adoption and a 3,200 percent increase for cats. Although the adoption rate has also increased over 100 percent, according to the Humane Society, many animals still need homes.
In order to reach families this holiday season they’re holding a “Home for the Holidays” adoption special. Currently through January 3, 2010 adult dogs are $40, cats are $20, kittens are $50 and rabbits are $35.
If adopting a pet isn’t a viable option, it is still possible to help keep the dogs happy and healthy by becoming a hiking buddy, volunteering, donating, or giving foster care. Through the Hiking Buddies program approved and trained applicants may check out dogs out for the day. Whether it be a stroll in the park or trek up Mt. Rose, different dogs of different athletic abilities are available. Although this program is meant to keep dogs healthy, it provides as much joy to wannabe dog owners like Andrew Wulf as the dogs themselves.
“I want to own a dog so badly, I just don’t have the space for one right now,” Wulf said. “It was great being able to take a dog out for the day, I just wish he could have come home with me.”
