Planting trees on Make a Difference Day

October 27, 2009

HIddenValleyHidden Valley Regional Park, Nevada – Other than the big cotton wood trees that line the banks of the Truckee River, Reno doesn’t really have any native trees. Yet, if you look down on the city from the surrounding hills or mountains you’ll see trees scattered everywhere. As the economic woes of this country hit our local Parks and Recreation Departments, volunteers are needed more than ever to help plant those trees. Read more

Reward yourself with Disabled Sports USA Far West

October 26, 2009

Alpine Meadows, Calif. – Of all the volunteer work I do, helping out with Disabled Sports USA Far West’s ski program is the most personally rewarding for me. Being on the mountain, helping someone else enjoy perhaps their best day of the year is a feeling that stays with you for a long time. If you want to join me in helping DSUSAFW sign up at www.disabledsports.net and be at Alpine Meadows for two days of training in early December.

Bend, Oregon – For years the Colorado Avenue Dam on the Deschutes River has been endangering the lives of people floating the river on lazy summer afternoons. A group of residents have been working for the last few years to take the dam out and replace it with a whitewater park much like Reno’s and needs public support to help push the project through. Not only will the whitewater park eliminate unnecessary danger, it will improve the river and the quality of life for the whole community. Read more

RubyIrisCloudRuby Lake National Wildlife Refuge, Nev. – Imagine an oasis in the middle of the desert sitting at the base of a towering mountain range. Surrounded by an arid landscape of scrub brush, chrystalline waters, grassy marshland and meadows materialize seemingly out of nowhere. Wildlife of all sorts flock to its shores. Find yourself on the banks of Ruby Lake and you won’t have to imagine this scene. Read more

Even after bagging up 3 tons of old tin, glass and car parts, there was still much to be removed. It was a beautiful day though and everyone there was stoked on what we accomplished. Read more

Restoring the Truckee River one plant at a time

October 13, 2009

IMG00042McCarran Ranch, Nevada -The Truckee River barely resembles the river it once was. Modifications have had such a negative impact that native species of plant and animal alike struggle to survive. Life is resilient though, as are rivers, and with the foresight to recognize that its natural state is its best state, The Nature Conservancy is helping save the river and all the life that relies on it, but they need our help.
