Sparks Marina, Nevada - Most people can’t imagine climbing a 3,000 foot rock wall. Now try thinking about doing it without the use of your legs. Mark Wellman didn’t just think about it, he got out of his wheelchair and climbed El Capitan in Yosemite N.P.. His inspirational accomplishments are what set the stage for the Mark Wellman Adventure Day and helping many other disabled children and adults imagine what they too can accomplish. Read more
Chat Forum: conversations on gardening
June 25, 2009
Reno, Nevada – Usually at this time of the year I am up in Alaska kayaking all over the state and no where near stationary enough to tend a garden. This summer I’m in Reno, in work mode, and doing everything I can to maintain my sanity with a close connection to the outdoors on a tight budget. Gardening has been my means to doing so and I’ve already started reaping the rewards with fresh veggies to eat. But gardening is an art that requires a lot of know how, so let’s see if we can leverage the wisdom of the crowd and get some good gardening tips going. Read more
Hiking Mt. Rose, Tahoe’s gentle giant, by Brooke Clupper
June 23, 2009
Mt. Rose, Nevada – Hail on Mt. Rose in mid-June was not what I had expected. However, as my boyfriend and I began our second attempt to hike Rose this spring, it seemed as though no obstacle sub lightening or an animal attack could derail us this time. Read more

Sheldon Wildlife Refuge, Nevada – The desert has a subtle beauty to it that I’m not used to. Most of the places I spend my time, such as the Sierra Nevada, the scenery seems to slap you in the face and say, “HEY! Pay attention I’m beautiful and you need to protect me.” The desert just waits quietly for you to notice. Humble as it may be, the desert needs us to protect it to, which is exactly what we did this weekend with the Friends of Nevada Wilderness. Read more
October 24th, International Day of Climate Action, by Jeremy Osborn
June 17, 2009
I’m writing this wrap-up from the latest round of UN Climate Negotiations in Germany, where world leaders are have been dragging their feet in creating a new climate treaty. Again. It’s politics as usual: without a clear demand from the public, politicians are being swayed by corporate lobbyists and others who oppose real action. Read more
The influence of the river: how kayaking has shaped my life
June 16, 2009
Nenana River, Alaska – I fell in love with kayaking the first time I paddled. By the time I swam my first Class III rapid at Razorback twenty minutes later, I was hooked. It was the first and only time I paddled the Nenana River that summer, but I had already resolved to buy a kayak and come back to learn the next year. I couldn’t have known that kayaking was about to take me around the world and send me down a path of social change. Read more
No Second Guessing – Call of the Arkansas keeps guide trainee coming back for more, by Audrey Gilpin
June 14, 2009
Salida, Colorado – After fifty-eight hours, blisters, two sore shoulders and a wet suit rash, I’m about 30 hours away from completing raft guide training with Independent Whitewater in Salida, Colorado. When the opportunity presented itself to take the two week guide training class on the Arkansas River, I knew I couldn’t let the chance to get stronger and more confident on the river pass me by.

Urban and adventure: Reno offers the best of both worlds, by Larry McKurtis
June 9, 2009
I’ve lived in a lot of different places, some colorful in nature, some colorful in human culture. I’ve lived in a ghetto where I was lucky to keep my car in it’s space overnight. I’ve lived on a ranch in the middle of the plains in Texas. I was lucky to grow up in the west side of Sierra Valley, one of my favorite places on Earth, and it’s only an hour from Reno.
