Connected or Disconnected?

May 27, 2008

Juneau, Alaska and the Mendenhall GlacierInside Passage, Alaska – I’m not sure what I’m more amazed by, the glass-like salt water, temperate rain forest, and glacier clad mountain peaks passing by as we float north, or the fact that I’m able to connect wirelessly and write about it as it’s happening. Actually scratch that, I know what I most amazed by, nothing rivals Alaska. Read more

Mendenhall Glacier, Juneau, AlaskaOver the next three days I will be on a ferry from Bellingham, Washington to Haines, Alaska. The route that the ferry takes, the Inside Passage, is one of the most beautiful and life rich regions of the world. Creating Conversation Within a Network Society

On March 29, 2008 Ben Johnson, an extreme skier from Salt Lake City, Utah, broke his neck and nearly killed himself jumping off an 80-foot cliff in the World Telemark Free-skiing Championships. In a remarkable way, Johnson’s accident highlighted the role of journalism in communities and how that role has changed. Read more

JunkshowFairbanks, Alaska – I got a check in the mail today from Musicians With a Cause band, Junkshow, for $400 in support of Ben Johnson’s efforts to raise money to buy a sit-ski this fall for a Salt Lake adaptive sports program. The timing is perfect because last night I got this text from Ben, “Wanted to let you all know that I started walking today! No more wheel chair, just a cane! Feels so good to be back on my feet.” Read more

Reno Whitewater FestivalReno, Nevada – I’ve heard about the Reno Whitewater Festival for years and this weekend I finally got to go check it out for myself, have a beer, and watch many of the world’s best kayakers throw-down in the play whole that I’ve made my home for the last 10 months.
