Thanks Mike, it's so important to look critically at the use of hydro as a source of energy, particularly when it's labeled "green". That's actually the very issue that helped spawn this website and non-profit organization after a trip to Uganda in 2006 to kayak the Nile and learning of a dam being built: http://lifemorenatural.com/?p=526.

So often these major hydro projects are simply put in place to benefit the developers of the project itself. This is true of the Bujagali dam in Uganda which will have next to no impact on improving the lives of the people of Uganda, the Three Rivers Dam in China and seemingly on the people of South Korea that you highlighted in the previous episode. Just like with petroleum though, we can't rule out hydro in the effort to fulfill our energy needs, but it's important to do it the right way, the smart way.

Micro-hydro is an important technology that helps empower people economically and socially in a direct manner, unlike major hydro projects. There are so many alternatives out there and it's up to us as consumers to demand forms of energy production that benefit us and the world we must sustain rather than simply fattening the pockets of major utilities and developers.

[...] I had roughly two and half hours to make it to the top, so stopping to appreciate the flowers and more importantly, catch my breath, was limited to 10-second intervals. It was amazing to see the valley floors of the Great Basin stretch out so far below me though. All I kept thinking though was, “can’t stop now, gotta get to the top,” and “good god this steep,” (that last one was probably a bit more colorful language, but I’ll paraphrase for the fact that some readers don’t appreciate my sailor’s tongue).
