Paddlers needed for upcoming Truckee River Clean-Up!

It’s time for the annual Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful Truckee River Clean-up! We need paddlers to help clean up after a big season on the mighty Truckee River. Tahoe Whitewater Tours is providing IKs and rafts again this year so all you will need is a pfd, helmet, and gear to keep warm in the water. We will meet at Barbara Bennet Park Saturday morning (September 25th) and be off the river around noon. Read more
Volunteers needed in the Alta Toquima Wilderness

Friends of Nevada Wilderness and the Austin Ranger District will be scouting and flagging a route for a volunteer trail maintenance project this coming weekend. We need volunteers to help with the scouting process, but we also just want to get people out to see this amazing area and experience a great wilderness trail.

UC Davis needs volunteers at three Tahoe environmental facilities

Incline Village, NV – The UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center (TERC) is looking for docents to provide guided tours of its science education center. The UC Davis Thomas J. Long Foundation Education Center is located on the campus of Sierra Nevada College, inside the Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences. Docents provide free guided tours to the public, Tuesday – Friday, 1 – 5pm and on Saturdays, Memorial Day through Labor Day. The center also caters to fifth and sixth-grade school groups by providing hands-on science activities. Read more

Soldiers disabled in Iraq gain confidence by learning to ski

Tahoe City, CA – As part of a week of skiing and celebration, 25 active-duty U.S. soldiers and marines will hit the slopes Wednesday, March 17, Friday, March 19, and Saturday, March 20 for the Wounded Warrior Ability Camp at Disabled Sports USA Far West, located at Lake Tahoe’s Alpine Meadows Ski Resort, for ski and snowboard lessons. You can say it’s about doing good, making people feel better, making the environment better or whatever, but that doesn’t really get at the simplicity of why we all do it. There’s something special about taking someone out for a skiing lesson and listening to him laugh all the way down the mountain. It was particularly special because this student was nonverbal and the only communication we had from him all day was that laughter.
